Picture this, Otis and I out for our 6 am walk (Yes, I do get up that early) and we are walking up toward our house. Out comes my neighbor (Who I love, he’s in his 80’s a is a sweetheart) with his new puppy. She is a sweetie pie and loves me to death. I mean who wouldn’t. LOL. Well, since Amos passed I have been trying to make sure Otis sees other dogs on a regular basis. Amos was ALWAYS the greeter, weather it was dogs or people. Amos would go say hello, then Otis would follow. I guess once he felt it was ok.Otis is having a hard time learning how to do this. My neighbor had his pup outside on his deck with a fence so she could get out yesterday. I took Otis over; he barked but wagged his tail. He wouldn’t get to close to her. Being very timid as always.

Well, this morning when the pup ran over to greet me. All the fur on Otis’ back stood up. He didn’t bark, didn’t sniff, and just glared. And it his fur stood on end. I haven’t seen him do this before. Was he scared or just protective? I was so nervous he was going to nip her. Once my neighbor came to get his pup and she was in his arms, Otis’ tail starting wagging and he was greeting my neighbor like always. How do I let Otis know it’s going to be ok? I feel so bad for him. *2

Really hard to say without actually seeing it. He has had a rough time of this as well. When the pack (yes, you,Amos,Otis and James are a pck) changes, there are new positions to be made/ taken over. He will come around you need to be the leader and show him thatit is alright to be around other dogs. Get down and show him you are okaying the pup to be near you and your pack that he is to do the same. Do you understand what I am saying?

I agree, I think he just needs to be comforted and told everything is OK....his life has changed and he doesn't know what to make of it...

I was petting the Puppy and he was just not paying me any mind. We are going to meet up with a friend over the weekend. She's going to bring her dog, so this will be try #2. But I get what you are saying. Thanks for the advice. you guys rock. Hugs!

Melissa, any updates on how Otis is coming with his grieving process, and interactions with other dogs?

Otis is doing very well. He now LOVES the new dog. He always looks to see if she is outside, and the tail wags at her now. He is adjusting well. I am so happy about that. My heart still breaks for him that he lost his brother, but he is doing good.

I'm so glad, hon.  Animals have a way of healing quickly, and helping us to get through our grief as well.  My thoughts are with you both, and prayers for little Amos, waiting at the Rainbow Bridge.
