Does anyone have a suggestion for grooming double-coated dogs?  My Sarge is a seven-year-old Shepherd/Chow mix, and he's a fur factory.  Bathing him is nearly impossible.  Water sheds off him like a duck, and the hair is continual.  I've tried combs that are supposed to be for that, I've tried hairbrushes, shedding combs like those for horses, and everything that I've seen.  I can't vacuum him, because he's such a wuss with noise.  I'm at the point of shaving him, but I'm afraid that people will think he's a funny-looking pig.  Any ideas?

Is that a brush, or what?  I read the review, and wasn't sure it would work for Sarge.  Is it expensive?

Very expensive for a brush/comb but WELL WORTH the money! Petsmart carries them, look on their site. They are everywhere, type it in a google search to see if it is cheaper else where but I don't think it is.

Don't have one of those, the excuses for anything to do with the dogs is "We didn't want them...you did" and everything else goes in one ear and out the other. I pretty much do it all myself here. Sorry

Please don't shave a double coated dog. It can harm them, besides that those guard hairs are protection against the heat and UV in the summer. I have found many good brushes that work fantastic, but it is a little arm work. The Coat King is a fantastic one, and we use that when getting our male pug ready for the show, so he doesn't shed as much on the judge LOL.

I also like an undercoat rake, and it looks like a rake. Usually costs $4.00 at Walmart. I also find it is best to brush them out just after a bath, as it loosens up the undercoat. The undercoat is really what needs to come out. If you don't want to do it yourself i know that we (the grooming salong i own) do this for customers dogs all the time for around $50.00.

If you google shaving a double coated dogs you will find a bucket load of warnings against it.

Hope that helps a bit.

Tanya

Tanya, I was kidding about shaving Sarge!  I know all about the fur being their insulation, and have a rake, and a two-layered comb for double-coated dogs.

As for the bath, he's like trying to bathe a duck.  The water just sheets off his coat, and we get wetter than he does!  hehe  I've read that dogs don't need to be bathed often, if they're brushed out on a regular basis.  He's 60 pounds of raw nerves on a good day, and baths only make him more frantic, so we try to avoid them.  However, skunking is the exception to the rule, which happened three years ago, right after we moved down here.  NOT a pretty sight, nor pleasant situation when Steve let them in the house immediately after, not realizing what had just happened.  There's nothing like the fresh scent of skunk to wake the whole household at 5 a.m., especially when the dogs ran the entire length of the house.

*ohah

Glad to hear you are joking...LOL because i get people calling me daily wanting to shave their Labs, Huskies, Malamutes, Goldies, and many other breeds. I will not do it, and tell them why. Many of them choose to do it at another groomer which is fine. Recently i had a lady who wanted me to shave her Great Pyrenese and i explained why we will not... she went and got it done at a local vet's office, the dog got sick from a sun burn within 48 hours. She is sueing the vet for $40,000. I don't know if she will win... but the vet's office should have known better.

Tanya, I've seen much in my time, and shake my head at the most bizarre.  This woman just might win, because you're correct--the vet SHOULD have known better, and probably DID know better, but still chose to take the woman's money.  It would be what I call a stupidity penalty...
